Over the decades, Edlen has overcome many major changes, from economic downturns, to catastrophic national events. Edlen is now facing a global pandemic that is disrupting everyday life. In these critical times, it is important to stay strong and maintain a positive outlook. We look forward to honoring our founders and celebrating this significant anniversary throughout 2020.
45 years ago, electricians Ed Cimino and Lenny Swimmer started a temporary utility service company in Miami. The 1970s tradeshow industry was a fledging image of what it would become. Over the decades, the industry grew and Edlen grew with it, opening new branches to service emerging tradeshow markets in the nation. Now, the tradeshow and convention business is a $13.2 billion dollar industry, and Edlen is the nation’s leading independent temporary electrical contractor.
This year marks Edlen’s 45th anniversary. We celebrate our legacy, our team, and the relationships built over the years. Over the course of the year, we will showcase Edlen’s extensive history, spotlight our people and give insight on the ever-changing tradeshow industry.
Join us in celebrating Edlen!

Exhibitions and events are an integral part of Nevada’s economy. Per the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development, tourism, entertainment and gaming are a key driver of the state’s economy, accounting for 433,405 statewide jobs in 2019, 117% above the national average.
The tourism industry in Southern Nevada remains the biggest driver of economic activity in the region, with direct visitor spending in 2018 estimated at $34.5 billion according to Applied Analysis. In total, the Southern Nevada tourism industry is estimated to directly employ 234,000 workers, equating to 23.9 percent of the region’s total workforce and 26.7 percent of private sector employment in 2018.
According to the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR) economist Dr. Allen Shaw, exhibitions and events contributed more than $100 billion to the US GDP in 2019. Dr. Shaw has projected an economic loss in the U.S. of upwards of $22 Billion due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its ripple effects on the U.S. economy. You can read the press release here.
The unprecedented public health crisis we’re facing right now has ground business meetings and events to a halt and put Nevadans who rely on spending from these events in peril.
Countless organizations in Nevada, including my own, exist to facilitate the business of face-to-face interactions in order to conduct business around the country and the world, and these events fuel the local economy, along with millions of jobs nationwide. The U.S. exhibitions industry and the businesses that support these events contribute so much to our
community, many of them small businesses, and we simply cannot weather this storm on our own.
Our broader industry has called on Washington to establish a fund to keep workers employed, provide emergency liquidity for businesses servicing events to remain open and increase funding for the Small Business Administration loan program. Congress must act today to ensure the Nevada business events industry and its more than 400,00 workers can
sustain themselves through this painful economic period.
Edlen is dedicated to the safety and well-being of its employees, clients and customers. As your valued partner, I want to continue to assure you that as the Coronavirus situation rapidly evolves, we are working diligently to ensure that our employees have the most up to date information and resources to best serve you. Our business continuity strategy and plan has been updated by our executive leadership team to address COVID-19. This plan will assist our front-line managers in planning for and responding to a wide variety of critical situations/escalations that may arise.
Below is a sampling of our plan:
Risks / Staffing and Contingencies
In the event Edlen is required to replace a key member working on your show and/or in your facility, Edlen will proceed as follows:
Due to Edlen's size and position within the trade show industry, Edlen employs a large national support network of highly trained professionals at all levels of event production. This nationwide network of event management staff allows Edlen to support you or any of our 18 branches nationwide, without interruption.
Specifically,
In addition to our Risks/Staffing and Contingencies plan, Edlen's executive leadership team has outlined and continually discusses the following components that enhance our business strategy and continuity plan:
• Protocol on hygiene & sanitation
• Travel and travelers
• Quarantine & infection situations (situational planning)
• What if staffing scenarios
We are committed to keeping all of our Edlen employees informed on the COVID-19 threat, including but not limited to virus symptoms, recommended travel restrictions, and most importantly precautions to be taken from a hygiene perspective to protect themselves, their families, and everyone on your show and/or in your facility.
Please know that we share in your vigilance to address all issues associated with this outbreak.
Sincerely,
Jim Wetterling
President/CEO
Edlen Electrical Exhibition Services
The Los Angeles Convention Center releases a monthly newsletter that features a profile of a member of the LACC team. This month, one of the featured employees was Edlen's Foreman Jason Turgasen.
How long have you worked at the LACC and how did you get into your field?
I’ve been with Edlen for almost 6 years. I bounce around to different locations, but I’d say at least 80% of my time is spent at the LACC. I used to work in construction and work on the same site for 6-8 months at a time; in 2005, I started working as an electrician. I much prefer working with tradeshows because it’s something different every day.
What is your favorite event at the LACC?
MusiCares Person of the Year is hands down my favorite event. Tom Petty’s was the best one I’ve seen and Dolly Parton’s was a highlight too. We are on standby so we get to see everything including the rehearsals, which is cool because it’s a unique opportunity to see the people that I grew up listening to in a relaxed setting.
What is your favorite sports team?
I’ve been a fan of the Green Bay Packers my whole life. As a kid, I didn’t get a choice because my grandfather has owned season tickets for at least 20 years. I became a shareholder a few years ago when they did the expansion to Lambeu Field.
What do you do with your free time?
I like to camp and fish with my family. We also have a lot of animals: 1 dog, 1 cat, 2 snakes and 2 lizards. We’re getting chickens and goats soon; my daughters want to get the fainting goats.

Congratulations!

Maritza has been key in finding solutions to challenges in the market and is a valuable part of our team."

Her responsibilities in the San Francisco Branch are to seek out new business opportunities and to work with the team in managing local events. In her role as Director of Sales she will continue to seek out new business while nurturing relationships with local facilities and clients.

Edlen began providing service at Fort Worth’s Will Rogers Memorial Center in 2018. We were excited to work on the 99th Annual Fort Worth Kennel Club Dog Show. The iconic show has grown every year since it began in 1932 and now needed more power than was available on the show floor. Edlen was ready to take on the challenge.
As with all animal shows, the challenge lies in powering the grooming area, where powerful blow dryers, clippers and other tools are used simultaneously. For this particular event, approximately a third of the event’s exhibit space was utilized yet required more power than was available on the entire floor.
Edlen’s unique solution was to install a 400-amp hub a floor below and ran power up the columns in the exhibit space and into the rafters. The electricians then dropped the power from overhead. By working together with show management to reconfigure the event floor, Edlen was able to ensure power was delivered in an efficient and reliable manner while reducing labor expense.
Edlen’s out-of-the-box thinking and collaboration with the client made it possible to provide uninterrupted service for the entirety of the show. It also provides a long-term solution allowing the Will Rogers Memorial Center the ability to host the Fort Worth Kennel Club Dog Show for many years to come.

When Tracy joined the accounting team she integrated into the department and her position very quickly. Tracy’s “can do” attitude always shines through. She is a natural problem solver who possesses exceptional customer service skills.
She has been, and continues to be, instrumental in the development of a new major internal application. When the program was being developed she jumped in with both feet to help the implementation team. She helped write the User Guides, conducted nearly all of the training sessions on her own, answered numerous user questions through email and still managed to process payroll on time - a huge undertaking! Her grace-under-fire demeanor made the transition easier for everyone involved. The successful program roll-out would not have been possible without her help.
